An unconventional path
James didn't follow the traditional route into technology. Although he briefly attended university, he realized early on that it wasn't the right environment for him. Instead, he built his career through curiosity, determination and thousands of hours spent programming simply because he enjoyed it.
Having written code since childhood, James developed his skills through open-source projects before being given an opportunity to prove himself professionally. Eight years later, he's still driven by the same passion for making complex systems simpler and more reliable.
"I've always loved programming. I enjoy taking complicated things and making them simple and dependable."
For James, success isn't about finding the cleverest technical solution. Experience has taught him that understanding the client's business needs always comes first.
Solving the problems that matter
James spends much of his time helping law firms migrate critical business systems to the cloud while also developing Harbor's next generation of integration capabilities.
One project in particular stands out for James at Harbor. Faced with a complex client migration that carried significant operational risk, James designed a reusable integration framework that gave complete visibility throughout the process. The solution not only ensured a smooth go-live but has since been adapted for multiple client projects.
James enjoys turning complex technical challenges into simple, reliable solutions.
"When someone says something can't be done, I take that as a challenge."
Seeing clients benefit from dependable technology is one of the most rewarding parts of the job.
"One of the project sponsors kept saying, 'I'm not getting any emails, James.' That was exactly what we wanted. No alerts meant everything was working perfectly."
Investing in what's next
For James, Harbor's greatest strength is the depth of expertise across the business. Whatever the environment, there's always someone willing to share their knowledge or help solve a problem.
That collaborative culture has become even more important as artificial intelligence reshapes the legal technology landscape. James is already exploring how AI can improve the way integrations are designed and delivered, supported by Harbor's investment in new tools, training and development.
"They want you to succeed. They invest in helping you do things better."
James believes there are many routes into a successful technology career, and that curiosity, authenticity and a willingness to learn matter just as much as formal qualifications.
"If you enjoy technology, be yourself. Don't be afraid to say you don't know something. That's how you learn, and that's how you get better."
Outside of work, James rarely switches off from technology. Programming has been a hobby since childhood, and today he's often experimenting with open-source projects, testing the latest AI tools, or exploring new ways to solve problems long before they appear in a client project. For James, the best ideas don't always start at work, they often begin out of pure curiosity.
