Thirty percent of respondents reported they are using AI, up from 18% last year, according to the annual survey of law departments by consulting firm Harbor Global, which conducted the research in collaboration with the Corporate Legal Operations Consortium. And 54% said they are considering putting AI into place in the next one to two years, up from 40% in 2023.
The increased focus on AI and process automation comes as demand is rising, but headcount is not significantly increasing.

Departments are exploring innovative ways to get more done with the same amount of resources by using AI and other technology, she told Law360 Pulse in an interview.
This year's results also reflect a significant focus on cost control, which comes amid large increases in law firm billing rates, Woltjen said. She noted that 58% of respondents said they expected an increase in their outside counsel spending.
